Weather in Nepal

Nepal's climate varies greatly due to its diverse topography and altitude, leading to a wide range of weather conditions throughout the country. The climate is typically divided into four seasons: spring, summer, autumn, and winter.

Spring, which spans from March to May, offers an ideal opportunity to visit Nepal thanks to its pleasant and mild weather. Temperatures range from 16°C to 23°C (61°F to 73°F) at lower elevations, with cooler temperatures at higher altitudes. The current season is perfect for trekking, with clear skies and beautiful rhododendron forests in full bloom. Mountaineering expeditions are popular now too. In Nepal, heavy rainfall and occasional landslides happen during the summer season (June-August) due to the monsoon, especially in the lower regions. Despite the rain, some areas can still reach 30°C (86°F). The greenery and rice terraces are stunning this season.

The best time to visit Nepal is during autumn, which spans from September to November. After the monsoon season, the skies have cleared up, revealing stunning mountain views. The weather is consistently mild, with temperatures ranging from 15°C to 24°C (59°F to 75°F). The pleasant climate and breathtaking scenery make it the peak season for trekking, cultural tours, and wildlife safaris. Kathmandu and Pokhara, situated at lower elevations, experience milder temperatures ranging from 9°C to 12°C (48°F to 54°F). Winter is ideal for lower-altitude treks, cultural tours, and wildlife safaris in the Terai region.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the best time for tiger tracking in Nepal?

The best time to visit Nepal for tiger tracking is from September to November and March to April, particularly March to April. During these months, the environment blooms and the tigers are more visible. After winter, tigers come out of hiding to bask in the sun. Also, this is mating season, so they are more active and visible. Because of the great number of tigers that live in Bardiya National Park, there is a better possibility of seeing one than in other protected regions.

  • How close can we get to the tigers?

Tiger tracking tours are generally crafted to provide participants with the opportunity to observe tigers and other wildlife in their native surroundings, all the while ensuring minimal disruption to the animals. It's important to note that tigers are wild animals, and their behaviour can be unpredictable. Safety guidelines and regulations are in place to ensure both the safety of the visitors and the welfare of the wildlife. That’s why you might not be able to get too close. Typically, there are rules about maintaining a safe distance from the animals to avoid any potential conflicts or disturbances. Always prioritise the well-being of the animals and their natural habitat over getting too close for a photo or a thrilling experience.

  • What are the other activities to be involved in besides tiger tracking?

This tour focuses on tiger tracking but also offers jungle activities like jeep safari, canoe rides, and visits to an elephant breeding centre. You'll have the opportunity to encounter various birds and aquatic animals, including freshwater Gangetic Dolphins, Gharial Crocodiles, Blackbucks, One-Horned Rhinos, and other wildlife. You will also go on a Kathmandu sightseeing tour. During your stay in Kathmandu, you will visit historic landmarks in Kathmandu such as Kathmandu Durbar Square, Pashupatinath, Swayambhunath, and Boudhanath.

  • How do I find the clue of a tiger?

You will follow the instructions of the experienced professional tiger tracker given while in the jungle to get the best possible chance to see a tiger. You will search for trails such as scat, scratch marks on the trees, pugmarks (footprints), alarm calls, and many more with a little bit of luck. Once your guide ensures the tiger's location, the waiting game begins. Stay in a safe spot and wait for a delightful glimpse of the Majestic Beast—the Royal Bengal Tiger.

  • How does the terrain influence tiger tracking?

The terrain plays a crucial role in tiger tracking in Nepal, as it affects the movement, behaviour, and visibility of tigers. The dense forest cover poses a significant challenge as tiger trackers navigate through it, relying on indirect signs like pugmarks and scratches on trees. Water sources, such as rivers and lakes, play a pivotal role in guiding the tracking. Human settlement adds another layer of complexity, as tigers may avoid regions with heightened human activity. Grasslands and clearings offer better visibility for tracking, while altitude and weather conditions further shape the distribution of these elusive creatures.
