Kathmandu is known as the city of temples, with hundreds of temples scattered throughout the city. Here, you will explore centuries-old monuments and landmarks that showcase the country's rich history and art. Most of the sites you will visit here in Kathmandu are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

UNESCO World Heritage Sites

The journey begins at Kathmandu Durbar Square, a former royal palace adorned with captivating landmarks within its courtyard. These structures beautifully depict the rich history of the country through their remarkable architectural designs and authentic arts, such as wood carvings, sculptures, and pagoda-style buildings. Next up is Swayambhunath Stupa, a remarkable religious site that beautifully showcases the harmonious coexistence of Hindu and Buddhist traditions. The location of this place is on a small hilltop, providing a breathtaking view of the Kathmandu valley and some mountains on clear days. Located atop a hill, reaching the landmark requires ascending hundreds of stairs. Another notable site is the Pashupatinath Temple, a place of worship dedicated to the Hindu deity Shiva. This temple is not only one of the largest and oldest Shiva temples, but it is also highly respected and held in great reverence. When you enter the temple area, you will be greeted by the beautiful pagoda-style architecture that was constructed during the Malla era. The next beautiful monument is Boudhanath Stupa, dedicated to the Buddhist religion, which has some of the most fascinating architecture. This is one of the most revered and largest Buddhist stupas in the world. The monument is beautifully adorned with vibrant prayer flags encircling the stupa. As part of a sacred ritual, individuals respectfully circulate the stupa in a clockwise direction. Furthermore, Bhaktapur Durbar Square is one of the three durbar squares located within the Kathmandu valley. The place is situated in Bhaktapur district, also known as Khwopa. Like other Durbar squares, there are a multitude of ancient monuments showcasing some of the most exquisite architecture adorned with intricate artwork, including metalwork, wood carvings, and sculptures.

Weather in Nepal

Nepal's climate varies greatly due to its diverse topography and altitude, leading to a wide range of weather conditions throughout the country. The climate is typically divided into four seasons: spring, summer, autumn, and winter.

Spring, which spans from March to May, offers an ideal opportunity to visit Nepal thanks to its pleasant and mild weather. Temperatures range from 16°C to 23°C (61°F to 73°F) at lower elevations, with cooler temperatures at higher altitudes. The current season is perfect for trekking, with clear skies and beautiful rhododendron forests in full bloom. Mountaineering expeditions are popular now too. In Nepal, heavy rainfall and occasional landslides happen during the summer season (June-August) due to the monsoon, especially in the lower regions. Despite the rain, some areas can still reach 30°C (86°F). The greenery and rice terraces are stunning this season.

The best time to visit Nepal is during autumn, which spans from September to November. After the monsoon season, the skies have cleared up, revealing stunning mountain views. The weather is consistently mild, with temperatures ranging from 15°C to 24°C (59°F to 75°F). The pleasant climate and breathtaking scenery make it the peak season for trekking, cultural tours, and wildlife safaris. Kathmandu and Pokhara, situated at lower elevations, experience milder temperatures ranging from 9°C to 12°C (48°F to 54°F). Winter is ideal for lower-altitude treks, cultural tours, and wildlife safaris in the Terai region.

  • What food varieties can we try in Nepal?

The national food of Nepal, dal-bhat, a must-try cuisine of Nepal, can’t beat any other cuisines in the world. While dal-bhat is still at the top of the list, it is momo, the most famous one, that is similar to dumplings but comes in Nepali modifications with special flavourful spices. It comes in different fillings, such as vegetables and meats of different types. Other cuisines are Newari Khaja Set, Chatamari (Newari pizza), Dhedo and Gundruk, and Selroti. One thing you might find interesting about Nepal’s food is that it changes with the area you are visiting and the people of the culture they live within, making it even more interesting that the people come from different parts of Nepal. Lastly, don’t forget to try Nepali street foods, which include chatpate, safle, sekuwa, and leg pieces.
