Nepal is renowned for its abundant natural beauty and diverse geographical features, which you will explore during your 12-day stay in the country. Nepal possesses a truly unique geography, featuring a diverse range of landscapes, from towering mountains to expansive grasslands teeming with abundant flora and fauna. You will see gorgeous native and migrating birds throughout your Nepal bird-watching tour. The main attraction of this tour is the opportunity to encounter beautiful animals and birds in the wetlands of Nepal. These wetlands have served as a sanctuary for various species of wildlife, including migratory birds. You will have the chance to witness some of the rarest birds during your tour. This trip does not require any additional skills or prior experience, as you will be accompanied by an expert naturalist. They will provide you with all the necessary information about the surroundings and the animals you will encounter.

The Nepal Birdwatching Tour offers a wonderful opportunity to observe a wide variety of birds in their natural habitat. Nepal is a paradise for flora and fauna due to its unique geographical aspects, which are perfect for different types of birds and animals. Nepal is home to 12 national parks, spanning from the Himalayan region to the Terai region. These parks boast a diverse range of bird and animal species, numbering in the hundreds. Besides the native birds that Nepal houses, birds from across the world fly over the wetlands of Nepal during the winter season to escape the harsh weather in other parts of the world. For a close view of birds and animals, visit these three stunning national parks and wildlife reserves:

Chitwan National Park

Chitwan National Park is the oldest national park of Nepal, previously known as the Royal Chitwan National Park. It holds the honor of being the first national park established in the country and is recognized as a World Heritage Site. Chitwan is a diverse and vibrant location for wildlife, boasting a wide range of species. It is home to 75 species of mammals, representing 24 families. Additionally, there are 643 species of birds, belonging to 90 families, and 56 species of herpetofauna from 19 families. The area also supports 121 species of fish, spanning 26 families, and 206 species of butterflies from 7 families. Furthermore, Chitwan is rich in plant life, with 422 species representing 91 families. Also, Chitwan National Park is an ideal location to encounter endangered fauna such as the Royal Bengal Tiger, Asian Elephants, Four-Horned Antelope, Pangolin, Golden Monitor Lizard, Python, and more. When you go birdwatching, it is recommended to start early in the morning because there is a higher chance of spotting birds at that time.

Bardia National Park

Bardia National Park is known for its diverse wildlife, including the Royal Bengal tiger. With a population of approximately 355 tigers, visitors have a good chance of observing these majestic creatures in their natural habitat. In Bardia National Park, you can find several endangered animals, including the greater one-horned rhinoceros, swamp deer, and black buck. The park is also home to species such as Gharial and Marsh Mugger crocodiles, Gangetic Dolphins, and various bird species like the Lesser Whistling Duck, Bar-headed Goose, Greylag Goose, Garganey, Northern Shoveler, Sarus Crane, and other migratory birds. The park area has recorded a total of 61 mammal species, 531 bird species, 42 herpetofauna species, and 120 fish species. Activities such as Bird watching, Jeep safari, Tiger Tracking, and Canoeing can be done to observe the wildlife in Bardia National Park. Bardia is home to a variety of animals, including the Royal Bengal Tiger, Wild ElephantOne-Horned Rhinoceros, Swamp Deer, Black Buck, Gharial and Marsh Mugger Crocodiles, and Gangetic Dolphins. Bardiya is home to the highest population of Royal Bengal tigers, with approximately 125 adults. This significantly increases the chances of encountering one during your jungle excursion.

Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve

Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve is renowned in Nepal for its diverse range of bird species, with nearly 500 different types of birds. It was established with the primary goal of conserving the Asian wild buffalo, known as Bubalus Arnee or Arna locally, which is exclusively found within the Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve in Nepal. The wetland in Nepal is recognized as one of the 27 important bird areas in the country. It has been documented that approximately 527 species of resident and migratory birds can be found in this wetland. These wetlands are important sanctuaries for migratory birds as several migratory birds are found in this place during the migration seasons (Winter and Spring which starts from October to March). To observe these amazing creatures, you can participate in Rafting, Jeep Safari, Bird watching, and Jungle Walk. Boating and rafting offer the opportunity to observe wild water buffalo and elephants, while tracking can also be done in the reserve. Rafting in the Sapta Koshi River and observing Gangetic river dolphins are also popular activities.

Weather in Nepal: Nepal's climate varies greatly due to its diverse topography and altitude, leading to a wide range of weather conditions throughout the country. The climate is typically divided into four seasons: spring, summer, autumn, and winter.

Spring, which spans from March to May, offers an ideal opportunity to visit Nepal thanks to its pleasant and mild weather. Temperatures range from 16°C to 23°C (61°F to 73°F) at lower elevations, with cooler temperatures at higher altitudes. The current season is perfect for trekking, with clear skies and beautiful rhododendron forests in full bloom. Mountaineering expeditions are popular now too. In Nepal, heavy rainfall and occasional landslides happen during the summer season (June-August) due to the monsoon, especially in the lower regions. Despite the rain, some areas can still reach 30°C (86°F). The greenery and rice terraces are stunning this season.

The best time to visit Nepal is during autumn, which spans from September to November. After the monsoon season, the skies have cleared up, revealing stunning mountain views. The weather is consistently mild, with temperatures ranging from 15°C to 24°C (59°F to 75°F). The pleasant climate and breathtaking scenery make it the peak season for trekking, cultural tours, and wildlife safaris. Kathmandu and Pokhara, situated at lower elevations, experience milder temperatures ranging from 9°C to 12°C (48°F to 54°F). Winter is ideal for lower-altitude treks, cultural tours, and wildlife safaris in the Terai region.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • When is the best time of the day for bird watching?

The morning and evening are the most suitable times for bird watching. They travel for food in the morning and return in the evening, making them more active during these times and easy to spot. It is especially recommended to avoid the afternoon periods.

  • What birds can we see on this tour?

Nepal is known for its rich biodiversity, making it a paradise for flora and fauna. During your tour, you will have the opportunity to visit two major national parks in Nepal: Chitwan, Bardia National Park, and Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserves. There are 867 species of birds found in Nepal, of which 75 are migratory. Birds such as the Asian Openbill, Grey-headed Fish Eagle, Lineated Barbet, Red-naped Ibis, Lesser Adjutant, Red-velvet Bulbul, and Fulvous-breasted Woodpeckers are seen in the wetlands of Chitwan. Ruddy Shelduck, Darters, Brahmini Kites, Brown-headed Gulls, Cormorants, Oriental Pied Hornbills, Night Herons, Purple Herons, and Cinnaon Bitterns are seen in Bardiya National Park. Similarly, Asian Barred Owls, Great Barbets, Niltavas Kalij, Pheasants, Puff-throated Babblers, and Crimson Sunbirds are seen in Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve.

  • What aquatic animals are found in the Rapti River?

The Rapti River flows through Nepal and India and joins the Gandaki River, which is home to diverse aquatic creatures. Among its inhabitants are a variety of fish species, including carp and catfish. The river is also a habitat for the rare Gangetic Dolphin, with occasional sightseeing of these freshwater mammals emerging from the river. The river also hosts amphibians like frogs and reptiles such as turtles, snakes, and critically endangered Gharial and Mugger crocodiles.

  • What are the chances of spotting the Royal Bengal Tiger?

While spotting a tiger, choosing the right place and time makes a big difference. You can choose the time from September to November and March to April, as it is the best time for tiger spotting. In spring (March to April), the tigers come out of hiding to bask in the sun, as it is the period after winter. Also, it is the mating season, making tigers more active. However, it also depends on one's luck. There’s a better chance to spot it at Bardiya National Park, as it has more tigers in comparison to other protected areas.

Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve is famous for its diverse range of bird species, with nearly 500 different types of birds. It is also known for its unique wetland ecosystem, which is home to several species of mammals, including wild buffalo (arna), gangetic dolphins, and Indian rhinoceros. For this wildlife tour, you can pack all the normal things you would pack for any other tour. However, keep in mind that this tour is more focused on outdoor activities. Pack your binoculars for a clearer and closer view of beautiful birds from a distance without disturbing them. Bring your reusable water bottle to stay hydrated and help protect the environment while enjoying your bird watching activities.
