Travel insurance provides coverage for various risks, including the loss of personal belongings and unforeseen expenses. Travel insurance provides coverage for unexpected medical emergencies, including accidents. It is crucial to have travel insurance when visiting other countries.

Altitude Sickness: Altitude sickness, also known as acute mountain sickness (AMS), is a frequent concern for travellers while visiting Tibet, Lhasa, as the average elevation of it is above 3,000 m above sea level. While travelling to high-elevated places, it is necessary to acclimatise properly, and neglecting it may cause health issues, making your trip uncomfortable and even life-threatening. To avoid getting altitude sickness, it is important to stay hydrated and slowly let the body adjust to the elevation. You can also carry medication such as acetazolamide (Diamox) to prevent or reduce symptoms. Stay hydrated, and enjoy the visit.

Weather and Packing List Suggestions

While visiting any place, packing is important, which will make your trip easy and enjoyable. Packing depends on which season you are visiting, which will give you an idea of what to pack and what not to. Some ideas on what to pack depending on the climate are mentioned below.

  • Winter (November to March): The temperature can plummet to below freezing, reaching as low as -5°C to -15°C (23°F to 5°F). In higher elevations, the temperature is even more intense, so for this season, pack thermal wear, a heavy down jacket, warm sweaters, insulated gloves, a few pieces that you can layer, warm hats, scarves, and insulated shoes.
  • Spring (April to May) and Autumn (September to October): The temperatures are generally more moderate, with daytime temperatures typically ranging from 5°C to 15°C (41°F to 59°F). However, the temperature can drop to freezing at night. During this time, pack clothes you can layer, such as long sleeve shirts, fleece jackets, medium-weight coats, and comfortable warm pants. It is also recommended to have a waterproof outer layer in case of unexpected rain or snow.
  • Summer (June to August): The weather in Lhasa becomes more pleasant, with daytime temperatures ranging from 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F). During this time of the year, evenings can still be chilly, so try to pack lightweight and breathable clothing like T-shirts and pants. For the evening, take cosy sweaters or lightweight jackets as waterproof jackets and fast-drying clothes for rain.

Do’s and Don’ts:

  • Efficient packing is the key to comfortable travel.

  • Ask for permission before taking pictures and videos of people and places.
  • Remorse shoes before entering the religious landmarks.
  • Consider dressing modestly and comfortably.
  • Respect the culture and people of the area.
  • Travel for experience, not for the sake of travelling.
  • Remember to carry good sunscreen, as you will be exposed to sun, which can be quite intense.
  • Don’t litter; put trash in its place.
